This year’s workshop is the following:

SUPPORTING MEMBERS AFTER TREATMENT: Practical, Scenario‑Based Return‑to‑Work Training

Hosted by Michael Varieur (Executive Director of De Novo Treatment Centre) and Carmine Tiano (Director of Occupational Services of the Ontario Building Trades)

When one of your members return to work after addiction treatment or a mental‑health‑related absence, the decisions made in the first few weeks can shape their recovery, their employment stability, and their future in the trade. Are you confident you know how to respond?

Supporting Members After Treatment: Practical, Scenario‑Based Return‑to‑Work Training is an interactive workshop delivered by the Ontario Building Trades (OBT) in partnership with De Novo Treatment Centre. This session provides union representatives with practical education, evidence‑informed resources, and hands‑on learning designed for real‑world application.

Participants will engage in group activities, guided discussions, and a detailed case study that walks through how to support a member returning to work after addiction treatment, mental‑health recovery, or both. You will work through realistic scenarios and decision‑making exercises that address accommodation, safety, privacy, duty to cooperate, and the complexities of early‑stage return‑to‑work planning.

You will leave with practical tools you can use immediately to better support members, strengthen recovery at work, and contribute to safer, healthier workplaces across Ontario’s unionized construction industry, because supporting a member’s successful return is more than a responsibility; it’s an opportunity to change a life.
